Alice Birney Elementary, located in University Heights, has been an authorized International Baccalaureate World School Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) since 2009-2010 school year. Our school has a diverse population including many students whose families speak a wide-variety of languages. Our supportive, student-centered instructional environment reflects the most current teaching practices to ensure that every child grows to their potential. Students are expected to become active, compassionate, inquisitive learners.
Our school is one of many named after Alice McLellan Birney. We recognize Birney's contribution to families and education, for her dedication as co-founder of the National Parent-Teacher Association in 1897.
We acknowledge that our school site sits on Native Indigenous Kumeyaay Tribal Lands. We are grateful for the place and space that we have cultivated and the bountiful nourishment we receive and share with our community. We aim to be thoughtful stewards of the land on which we play, learn, teach, and grow.
