The Kearny High Educational Complex is home to four small autonomous high schools: the School of Biomedical Science and Technology (BST), the School of College Connections (SCC), the School of Digital Media & Design (DMD), and the Stanley E. Foster School of Engineering, Design, and Innovation (EID).
Each small school is focused on a college and career pathway and has developed its own educational philosophy. The Kearny High Educational Complex serves the Linda Vista, Serra Mesa, and Kearny Mesa communities of San Diego and is nationally recognized as one of the most successful implementations of high school reform.
Kearny High School of Biomedical Science and Technology (BST)
At BST, all students experience hands-on science and technology through a nationally-recognized Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences and district Information Technology (IT) pathway. Students explore Principles of Biomedical Science, study Human Body Systems, Biomedical Interventions, and Biomedical Innovations alongside Foundations of Information Technology, Geographic Information Systems, & AP Computer Science Principles. Students also enjoy multiple field trips, guest speakers, and collaborative partnerships with local universities and industries through experiences such as "Doctor for a Day" at UCSD, Ted Talks with USD bioethics students, hackathons, coding events, and presenting at industry conferences. Students' culminating experience includes a medical internship at Rady's Children's Hospital, which introduces the medical field in major medical disciplines such as surgery, psychiatry, dermatology and pharmacology. At BST, students are able to enroll in Advanced Placement & Mesa Community College courses through our partnership that includes dual enrollment/dual credit for both high school and college classes.
Kearny High School of College Connections (SCC)
SCC provides students with unique access to college courses and college preparation. Our students can beginning taking Mesa College courses starting the 10th grade. Students have access to a wider curriculum than is traditionally available in high school, and they are able to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. Our students also have access to AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) courses that prepare them for the rigors of college. Many of our students graduate high school with the equivalent of one year of college credits already completed.
Partnership with Mesa Community College
- Legacy course - Beginning sophomore year, students may enroll in one or two Mesa College courses taught on the Kearny campus
- Fast Track - Beginning junior year, Fast Track students take one course a semester at Mesa College with a wide selection of choices

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Courses
These course prepare students to attend a competitive 4-year university after high school. Through the elective course, students receive:
- Guidance completing college applications, financial aid documents, and scholarship applications
