Although it's been a fixture in San Diego for more than a century, Little Italy's Washington Elementary School offers 21st Century learning as a STEAM magnet school.
Washington Elementary STEAM Magnet (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) is one of the oldest schools in San Diego. The school's home since 1914 is on State Street, between Fir and Date streets in Little Italy.
Our school is often described as a haven for children, nestled between two parks in the heart of downtown. The school is fondly remembered by veteran Little Italy residents whose grandparents and parents went to our school. It is now the neighborhood school for a new wave of urbanite families rediscovering the vibrant life in downtown San Diego.
Washington Elementary School weaves the theme of international citizenship throughout the curriculum and at each grade level. Every student has the opportunity to learn about the different cultures and people on our planet. Downtown San Diego provides the perfect backdrop for this kind of study. Our students participate in many Little Italy community events, as well as attend local theaters, museums, Balboa Park, and concerts.
Washington STEAM Magnet is one of the pillars of the community. This is reflected in the financial support, volunteerism, and respect local residents show our school. Students from the school participate in all of the Little Italy events through performances and works and the local business association supports our Washington Elementary School Foundation (WESF).
Our mission at Washington STEAM Magnet is to prepare students to be come new millennials by teaching them the skills they will need to contribute to a global society. Our curriculum is unique in that it integrates all instruction into units of inquiry on current issues, using science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
